This page is for applicants who have been refused home energy funding. It sets out practical next steps after a refusal. A refusal from one scheme does not rule out others. Read our support fund guide for the main low-income schemes.
For the broader overview, read our guide: Support Fund.
Independent guide. We are not a lender or a government body. Always check current scheme rules with the official provider.
Find out why
Start by understanding the decision. Ask the scheme for the reason in writing. A clear reason shows whether you can fix the problem. Keep the reply with your application records.
Steps after a refusal
Work through these steps in order. Each one either fixes the problem or points you to another route. Schemes handle reviews differently, so ask rather than assume.
- Ask the scheme for the reason for refusal in writing.
- Check you applied to the right scheme for your nation and home.
- Correct any missing or wrong information.
- Ask the scheme whether you can request a review, and how.
- Check other schemes you may qualify for.
Other routes to check
Another scheme may suit you better. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has no income test in England and Wales. Home Energy Scotland has no benefits requirement for Scottish homeowners. The Warm Homes Loan Scheme lets you spread the cost, although its eligibility is not yet confirmed. Compare the total cost of any loan before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I appeal a refusal?
Ask the scheme whether it offers a review and how to request one. Processes differ between schemes.
Can I reapply?
Ask the scheme. If the refusal was due to missing information, correcting it may help.
My income is too high for a grant. What else is there?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has no income test. A loan, such as the Warm Homes Loan Scheme, is another route.
Someone says they can overturn my refusal for a fee. Should I pay?
No. Contact the scheme directly. Official schemes do not need paid agents.
So you can understand the decision, fix what you can and move on to the scheme that fits.
