Comparing Solar Panel Grants and Funding Limits in the UK

Compare the funding category before comparing the amount advertised beside a scheme's name. A solar loan limit is not a grant, and a heating grant does not fund panels. Some schemes require a household assessment before deciding which measures to support. This guide separates those distinctions so you can contact the right provider with a precise question.

For the broader overview, read our guide: Solar Electricity Grant.

Independent guide. We are not a lender or a government body. Always check current scheme rules with the official provider.

1. Understand what a funding limit means

A maximum describes the upper limit within a published category, not an automatic payment to every applicant. Your eligibility, the proposed work and the provider's decision still matter. Check whether the amount applies to solar alone or to a wider group of measures. Do not add together headline limits without confirmation that the rules permit that combination.

Warm Homes: Local Grant offers up to £15,000 for energy performance measures including solar panels and batteries. This is not a separate £15,000 solar award plus another battery award within that category. The scheme also has a separate heating category, but this page focuses on solar. Ask your council how its assessment allocates support across the proposed measures.

The Warm Homes Loan Scheme instead sets a £15,000 solar borrowing maximum and a separate £15,000 battery maximum. Borrowing must be repaid under the lender's terms. Eligibility rules, application arrangements and lender rates remain unconfirmed as last checked. Do not treat a published maximum as confirmation that a product is available to you.

  1. Identify the nation and measure covered by the scheme.
  2. Check whether the advertised amount is a grant category or a borrowing limit.
  3. Ask the provider to confirm support for your actual installation.

2. Compare the routes without mixing categories

Use this table as a starting point for official enquiries rather than a complete eligibility decision. It includes schemes that people sometimes confuse with solar grants. Where no solar amount is confirmed here, the table deliberately avoids suggesting one. Keep any heating support separate from the cost of panels in your installation quote.

Home Energy Scotland's verified heat pump and biomass funding is not a solar entitlement. Do not transfer those figures into a solar budget because the same provider discusses home energy upgrades. Nest also needs a direct enquiry about the help available for your circumstances. For Northern Ireland, use official local advice rather than applying a Great Britain scheme by assumption.

3. Record the provider's answer

Ask the provider whether solar is supported, who can apply and how installers are arranged. Request any written conditions concerning approval, equipment or the start of work. If a grant and loan are proposed together, ask both providers to confirm compatibility. The confirmed combination of a Warm Homes Loan and Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant concerns eligible heating support, not a solar grant from BUS.

Keep an itemised quote showing solar separately from batteries and heating work. This makes it easier to see which funding category relates to each part of the installation. Record any personal contribution or borrowing requirement stated in the offer. Compare total credit costs before choosing a loan to cover a gap that the provider has actually confirmed.

Checklist

  • I checked the scheme's nation and measures.
  • I separated grant categories from loan maximums.
  • I have not counted heating grants as solar support.
  • I asked about combining funding.
  • I kept solar costs separate in my quote.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Local Grant give me £15,000 just for solar?

The limit covers an energy performance category including solar and batteries. The council assesses the work and support; it is not an automatic solar award.

Can I use my Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for panels?

No. Its published categories cover eligible heating measures, not solar panels. Keep heating and solar funding separate.

Can I assume my Scottish heat pump funding also covers solar?

No. Ask Home Energy Scotland about solar directly. Funding levels for other measures must not be treated as a solar entitlement.

How do I compare my grant with a loan?

Check the grant conditions and confirmed contribution first. A loan adds repayment obligations, so compare affordability and total credit costs separately.

So you can compare the right funding categories without mistaking a maximum or heating grant for solar support.
