Solar Panel Grant Application Checklist and Documents

Ask the scheme provider for its document checklist before sending personal information or booking an installation. Schemes commonly ask for identity, property, income and quote evidence, but requirements differ. A prepared folder helps you answer requests without assuming that every document is mandatory. This guide covers preparation, while the parent guide explains the wider funding routes.

For the broader overview, read our guide: Solar Panel Grants UK.

Independent guide. We are not a lender or a government body. Always check current scheme rules with the official provider.

1. Confirm the scheme and its checklist

Start by checking that the scheme covers your nation, household circumstances and proposed solar installation. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme supports heating measures, not solar panels, so its application route is not a solar checklist. For Warm Homes: Local Grant in England, contact your council about the assessment and required evidence. Ask which documents it needs now and which follow after a survey.

The Warm Homes Loan Scheme has a £15,000 solar maximum, but its application arrangements remain unconfirmed. Do not present a general document list as the official loan application process. Ask for current instructions through the official provider once they are available. Avoid sending identity documents to someone offering paid early access to a scheme.

Use the provider's own contact details and confirm its secure submission method. Ask whether copies are sufficient and how it wants files named or grouped. Keep your originals and note when each item was sent. If you cannot obtain a document, ask about acceptable alternatives rather than guessing or altering the evidence.

  1. Confirm the provider, scheme and proposed measure before collecting sensitive documents.
  2. Request the current checklist and approved submission method directly.
  3. Make a folder for evidence, quotes, correspondence and the eventual offer.

2. Prepare commonly requested evidence

Schemes commonly ask for the types of evidence listed below. Treat this as a preparation aid, not a requirement imposed by every provider. The exact information depends on the scheme and your circumstances. Ask why an item is needed if a request does not match the provider's published instructions.

  • Identity and address evidence, using the documents the provider accepts.
  • Ownership or tenure information, including landlord involvement where relevant.
  • Household income or qualifying benefit evidence for assessed support.
  • Your home's EPC information where the scheme uses an energy rating test.
  • Written installer quotes or survey details, if the provider asks you to obtain them.
  • Details of the proposed equipment and any other funding you are seeking.

Warm Homes: Local Grant eligibility includes EPC D to G and income of £36,000 or less, or qualifying benefits. Those tests explain why property and household evidence can be relevant to an assessment. They do not establish a universal set of acceptable documents. Let the council confirm the evidence needed for your particular application.

Ask how the scheme chooses or approves installers before commissioning quotes at your own expense. Many funding routes require MCS-certified installation, so check the proposed firm's certification where required. Keep equipment descriptions consistent across quotes and application forms. Report changes to the provider rather than assuming an earlier assessment covers a different installation.

3. Check the submission and approval record

Review the application against the provider's checklist before sending it through the confirmed channel. Ensure your name, address and proposed work are consistent across the documents. Keep a copy of what you submitted and any acknowledgement or reference supplied. An acknowledgement is not the same as approval to start work.

Ask whether the scheme requires a written offer before ordering equipment or beginning installation. Home Energy Scotland requires a written offer before work starts, but solar support must be checked directly with that scheme. Do not extend one provider's conditions to every other route. Record the actual conditions, deadlines and installer requirements given for your application.

Checklist

  • I have the provider's current document checklist.
  • I know the secure submission method.
  • My evidence matches the application details.
  • I kept copies and a submission record.
  • I understand any approval-before-work condition.

Frequently asked questions

Which documents will my scheme require?

Ask the provider for its current checklist. Schemes commonly request identity, property, income and quote evidence, but acceptable documents and timing vary.

Do I need an EPC for my application?

Warm Homes: Local Grant uses EPC D to G eligibility. Confirm what evidence your provider accepts rather than assuming the same requirement applies everywhere.

Should I send my documents to an agent?

Confirm the provider and its approved submission channel first. Do not share sensitive evidence with someone promising paid access or guaranteed approval.

Can I start work after submitting my form?

Submission is not approval. Ask the provider whether a written offer is required before work and follow the conditions it supplies.

So you can submit the evidence your provider actually requires and keep a clear approval record.
