This page is for applicants who want to avoid delays or a refused application. It lists the most common mistakes and how to put each one right. The same errors appear across many schemes. For a general overview of funds, read our home energy fund guide.

For the broader overview, read our guide: Home Energy Fund.

Independent guide. We are not a lender or a government body. Always check current scheme rules with the official provider.

Mistakes that can cost you funding

Some mistakes make you ineligible after the fact. These matter most, because you cannot undo them. Read each one before you sign anything with an installer.

  • Starting work before a written offer. Home Energy Scotland does not fund work that began before its written offer.
  • Using an installer without MCS certification. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme and Home Energy Scotland need MCS-certified installers and products.
  • Applying to the wrong nation's scheme. Warm Homes: Local Grant is for England only, and Home Energy Scotland is for Scotland only.
  • Paying upfront fees to unofficial agents. Official schemes do not need a paid middleman.

Mistakes that slow your application

Other mistakes cause delays rather than refusal. You can usually fix these quickly. Check them before you submit.

  • No EPC, or an out-of-date one, when the scheme sets an EPC test.
  • Missing income or benefit evidence.
  • Names or addresses that do not match across documents.
  • Missing landlord consent for a rented home.

Troubleshooting a stuck application

Contact the scheme if you hear nothing for a long time. Ask what stage your application has reached and what is missing. Keep a record of each call or email. If you used an agent, check the agent is genuine before you share more details.

  1. Ask the scheme for a status update in writing.
  2. Send any missing documents straight away.
  3. Confirm your installer's MCS number on the MCS website.
  4. Check any lender on the FCA register.

Frequently asked questions

I started work before my offer arrived. What now?

Contact the scheme straight away and explain. Home Energy Scotland's rules say work must not start before the written offer.

My installer is not MCS-certified. Does it matter?

Yes, for schemes that need MCS. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme and Home Energy Scotland both require it.

Someone offered to apply for me for a fee. Is that normal?

Official schemes do not need a paid agent. Contact the scheme directly instead.

My EPC is missing. Can I still apply?

Some schemes need one. Ask the scheme, and arrange an EPC if required.

Can I correct an application after I send it?

Contact the scheme and ask. Most will tell you how to add or correct information.

So you can spot and fix the errors that delay or block funding before they happen.
