This page is for anyone ready to apply for home energy funding. It gives one ordered route from eligibility checks to installation. Each scheme has its own form, so treat these as general stages. Our home energy fund guide explains which fund suits which home.

Before you apply
Good preparation saves time once you start a form. Confirm the scheme fits your nation and home first. Then gather the facts each scheme asks about. You will answer questions on income, tenure and your EPC rating.
- Find your EPC rating on the official register.
- Note your household income and any benefits.
- Decide which upgrade you want, such as a heat pump or solar panels.
The application steps
Most schemes follow a similar order. Follow the official provider's instructions where they differ from this list. Keep copies of everything you send.
- Check eligibility with the official provider or GOV.UK checker.
- Contact the scheme: your council, Home Energy Scotland, Nest or an MCS installer for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
- Complete the application form and send any evidence requested.
- Arrange a home survey if the scheme asks for one.
- Get two or three written quotes from MCS-certified installers.
- Wait for written approval or a written funding offer.
- Book the installation only after you have that written confirmation.
- Keep the paperwork, certificates and warranties once work finishes.
After you apply
Waiting times differ between schemes and councils. Reply quickly to any request for more information. Home Energy Scotland offers stay valid for up to nine months, so plan your work within that window. If a scheme says no, ask for the reason in writing and check other options.
Frequently asked questions
Do I apply myself or does my installer apply?
It depends on the scheme. For the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, your MCS installer applies. For Warm Homes: Local Grant, you apply through GOV.UK or your council.
Can I start work while I wait?
Wait for written approval. Home Energy Scotland requires a written offer before any work starts.
Do I need a survey before I apply?
Some schemes arrange one as part of the process. Ask the scheme what it needs.
Can I apply for the Warm Homes Loan Scheme yet?
The application process is not yet confirmed. Check official sources before you share any details.
So you can move from first check to installation in the right order, with written approval in hand.
