This page is for applicants gathering paperwork for a grant or loan. It lists the documents schemes commonly ask for. Each scheme sets its own list, so always check the official guidance. Our upgrade fund guide covers which funds suit homes outside low-income support.
For the broader overview, read our guide: Upgrade Fund.

Documents schemes commonly ask for
Most schemes ask you to prove who you are and where you live. They also check your link to the property and, for some schemes, your income. Gather these early so you can reply quickly.
- Proof of identity, such as a passport or driving licence.
- Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or council tax bill.
- Proof of ownership, or proof of landlord status for a rented home.
- Benefit letters or income evidence, where the scheme sets an income test.
- Your home's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
- Written quotes from MCS-certified installers.
Documents for landlords and tenants
Rented homes need extra paperwork. A tenant usually needs the landlord's consent before work can go ahead. Landlords may need to show ownership and the number of properties they let. Warm Homes: Local Grant funds the first landlord property in full and further properties at 50%.
Keeping your documents in order
A tidy set of documents speeds up every stage. Use the same name and address on every form. Keep copies of what you send and note the date. After installation, keep your MCS certificate and warranties safe.

Frequently asked questions
Does every scheme ask for the same documents?
No. Each scheme sets its own list. Use this page as a starting point and check the official guidance.
Do I need income evidence for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has no income test. Check the current rules with your installer and the official provider.
Where do I find my EPC?
Search the official EPC register with your postcode. If your home has no EPC, a qualified assessor can produce one.
I rent. What do I need?
You usually need your landlord's consent. Ask the scheme what evidence it needs from you and your landlord.
Should I send original documents?
Follow the scheme's instructions. Most accept copies or uploads.
So you can send a complete application first time and avoid back-and-forth requests.
