This page is for applicants planning when work can start and finish. It explains the usual stages from application to payment. Only a few timing rules are published, and we list those clearly. For the wider funding picture, read our upgrade fund guide.

Confirmed timing rules

Two published rules affect your planning directly. Both come from official sources. Build your plans around them first.

  • Home Energy Scotland offers stay valid for up to nine months, and work must not start before the written offer.
  • ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026, with no successor obligation announced.

The usual stages

Most applications pass through similar stages. The time each stage takes varies by scheme, council and installer. Ask each party how long its part usually takes.

  1. Eligibility check and application.
  2. Assessment of your application and evidence.
  3. Home survey, where the scheme asks for one.
  4. Written approval or funding offer.
  5. Installation by an MCS-certified installer.
  6. Sign-off and payment of the grant or loan.

Planning around delays

Leave room in your plans for each stage. Reply to requests quickly, because gaps in evidence add time. Book your installer only after written approval. If you are in Scotland, agree an install date that falls inside the nine-month offer window.
