This page is for homeowners who want to confirm an installer is genuinely certified. It shows how to check each register and fix common mismatches. Checks are free and take a few minutes. Our qualified provider list guide explains each register in more detail.

For the broader overview, read our guide: Any Qualified Provider List for UK Homeowners.

Independent guide. We are not a lender or a government body. Always check current scheme rules with the official provider.

How to verify an installer

Ask the installer for their certification numbers first. Then check each number on the official register yourself. Do not rely on a logo on a website or van.

  1. Ask for the MCS certification number and company name.
  2. Search the MCS website and confirm the details match.
  3. Check the products in the quote are MCS-certified.
  4. Search the TrustMark register.
  5. Confirm RECC or HIES membership on the code's website.
  6. If finance is offered, check the lender on the FCA register.

Troubleshooting common problems

Sometimes the register does not match what the installer told you. Most mismatches have a simple explanation, but some are warning signs. Ask the installer to explain in writing before you go further.

  • The number does not match. Ask the installer to confirm the number and check again. If it still fails, do not proceed.
  • The certification has lapsed. Do not sign until the register shows current certification.
  • The company name differs. Ask which company holds the certificate and which company will do the work and issue the contract.

Keep a record

Note the date and result of each check. Take a screenshot of the register entry. Keep these with your quote. They help if a dispute arises later.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I check MCS certification?

Use the MCS find-an-installer search. Check the products too.

What if the company name on the register is different?

Ask which company holds the certificate and which company will sign the contract. Get the answer in writing.

Can certification lapse?

Yes. Check the register shows current status close to the date you sign.

How do I check a finance provider?

Search the lender on the FCA register.

So you can confirm an installer's credentials yourself and spot problems before you sign.
